Shower Waterproofing & Tile Installation Done Right the First Time
A shower is a wet-room system, and the tile is only its finish layer. We build fully bonded waterproof showers using Schluter-KERDI membrane, prefabricated foam pans and curbs — or liquid-applied membranes where geometry calls for it. Every drain, seam, corner and penetration is detailed before the first tile is set.
Inside the system we correct slope to drain, plumb the walls and reinforce niches, benches and shampoo shelves so they are tiled, functional and fully inside the waterproofing. On the surface we set porcelain or ceramic with consistent joints and seal the movement transitions that grout alone can never survive.
The difference shows up years later: no moisture behind the walls, no swollen drywall on the other side, no musty smell — just a shower that still looks new and protects the structure around it.
What You Get
- Schluter-KERDI bonded waterproofing systems
- Prefabricated or mud-built pans with correct slope
- Flood-tested before tile goes on
- Tiled niches, benches & curb details
- Mold-resistant backer throughout
Pricing, honestly
What moves the price of shower waterproofing & tile installation in Central Connecticut
No two waterproofing quotes are the same, because no two Connecticut homes are. These are the exact variables the estimator weighs — and each one shows up as its own line on your written quote, so you can trim scope openly instead of negotiating a lump sum.
- Whether tile is already on the walls — full demo versus build-new scope
- Membrane system class — sheet or liquid bonded systems over the entire wet zone
- A 24-hour flood test adds a day to the schedule and saves the ceiling below
- Drain position — moved or new drains bring the licensed plumber into scope
- Built-ins: every niche and seat is waterproofed as an integral detail, not caulked on
Doing it right once costs less than skipping it twice
A slow leak behind tile doesn't announce itself. It rots framing, feeds mold and shows up years later as a stained ceiling downstairs.
Proper waterproofing
Membrane, drain seal, flood test — done right during the original build. Prevents everything below.
Tile rip-out & rebuild
If a leak is caught early: tile off, substrate replaced, re-waterproofed, retiled.
Mold + structural repair
If a leak runs for years: framing rot, mold remediation, ceiling repair.
Straight numbers, in writing
Every quote is itemized before work starts — no phone guessing, no pressure.
The 24-hour flood test
We flood your shower before we tile it. Drain plugged, pan filled, waterline marked and photographed at hour 0 and hour 24. If a drop moves, we find it while fixing it costs nothing.
Drain sealed
Expansion plug seated; every seam re-checked by eye.
Pan filled to the curb line
Waterline marked on the wall with the time. Photo #1 archived to your job.
Time & gravity work
No traffic in the pan. The test manufacturers require — most crews skip it.
Recheck & photograph
Waterline unmoved. Photo #2 is yours. Tile begins.
Three ways to waterproof a shower
Sheet membranes, painted liquids and pan liners all keep water out on day one. What differs is day 3,000. Our default is the gold column — the table says why.
| Feature | ★ KERDI (bonded sheet) | Liquid-applied | PVC pan liner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flood-testable before tile | ✓ same day | ✕ 24–72h cure | ✕ hard to test fully |
| Vapor sealed at every seam | ✓ KERDI-BAND, every seam | ✕ depends on coats | ✕ pan only |
| Puncture risk during tiling | ✓ very low | moderate | ✕ high |
| System warranty | ✓ Schluter warranty | varies | ✕ none typical |
| Where we use it | ✓ most showers | odd geometry | rarely |

Frequently Asked Questions
Waterproofing Questions, Straight Answers
Tile and grout are not waterproof — they never have been. The membrane behind them is what keeps water out of your wall cavity. A beautiful tile job over a bad waterproofing system fails within a few years; a correct system lasts decades.
A typical tub-to-shower conversion or full shower rebuild runs 4–6 working days: demolition and prep, waterproofing and flood test, then tile, grout and silicone. We keep the bathroom sealed and broom-clean every evening.
Yes — tub conversions are among our most requested projects. We rebuild the drain position, slope the pan correctly, waterproof the full wet area and tile it, adding glass, niches and benches to your plan.
Every bonded system is plugged and flood-tested for 24 hours before tile. If a drop moves, we find it while it is still inexpensive to fix — not after your tile is on the wall.
